Welcome to Bhutan:

Day 1: Arrival in Paro & Thimphu

Morning:

  • Arrival in Paro: Arrive at Paro International Airport, one of the most scenic airports in the world. The flight itself offers stunning views of the Himalayan mountains.
  • Drive to Thimphu (1.5 hours): After clearing immigration and customs, you’ll be met by your guide and driven to Thimphu, the capital city of Bhutan. En route, you’ll pass through beautiful valleys and terraced fields.

Afternoon:

  • Lunch in Thimphu: Enjoy a traditional Bhutanese meal, such as Ema Datshi (chili and cheese stew) or Phaksha Paa (pork with chili).
  • Visit Tashichho Dzong: This majestic fortress-monastery is home to the government’s administrative offices and the King’s Throne Room. Explore its beautiful architecture and learn about Bhutanese history.
  • Visit the National Memorial Chorten: A sacred stupa, this is one of the most important monuments in Bhutan. Locals often gather here for prayer and meditation.
  • Visit the Buddha Dordenma Statue: A giant Buddha statue overlooking the Thimphu valley, offering panoramic views and a peaceful atmosphere.

Evening:

  • Stroll in Thimphu: Explore the small but vibrant capital. Visit local handicraft shops, markets, and cafes.
  • Dinner: Enjoy a relaxing dinner at a local restaurant or your hotel.

Day 2: Thimphu to Punakha

Morning:

  • Breakfast in Thimphu.
  • Drive to Punakha (2.5 to 3 hours): After breakfast, drive over the scenic Dochula Pass (3,100m) on your way to Punakha. The pass offers breathtaking views of the Himalayan ranges and, on clear days, views of the snow-capped peaks of the eastern Himalayas.

Afternoon:

  • Lunch in Punakha.
  • Visit Punakha Dzong: One of the most beautiful and iconic dzongs in Bhutan, situated at the confluence of the Pho and Mo rivers. Known as the “Palace of Great Happiness,” the dzong is a stunning example of Bhutanese architecture and a great spot for photography.
  • Visit Chimi Lhakhang: A 15-minute walk from the Punakha Dzong, this temple is dedicated to Lama Drukpa Kunley, known as the “Divine Madman.” The temple is famous for its association with fertility, and many people visit to seek blessings for children.

Evening:

  • Explore the Punakha Valley: Take a walk along the river or through the paddy fields, enjoying the peaceful surroundings and the spectacular views of the valley.
  • Dinner in Punakha.

Day 3: Punakha to Paro & Tiger’s Nest Monastery Hike

Morning:

  • Early Breakfast & Drive to Paro (3 to 4 hours): After an early breakfast, drive back to Paro, the picturesque town that is home to some of Bhutan’s most iconic landmarks.

Afternoon:

  • Lunch in Paro.
  • Visit Tiger’s Nest Monastery (Paro Taktsang): One of Bhutan’s most famous sites, the monastery is perched on a cliffside over 3,000 meters above sea level. It’s believed to be the meditation site of Guru Rinpoche, who brought Buddhism to Bhutan. The hike up takes about 3 to 4 hours (depending on your pace) and is a memorable experience with stunning views of the valley and surrounding forests. You can also visit the lower viewpoint for a shorter, easier hike if time is tight.

Evening:

  • Relaxation & Dinner: After the hike, you can relax at your hotel or take a short walk around Paro. Enjoy a final dinner in Bhutan with traditional Bhutanese dishes.
